Nov. 13, 2004 FRESHMAN ASIF ABDUL-WADUD SELECTED THE WNEC MALE ATHLETE-OF-THE-WEEK SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Freshman cross-country runner Asif Abdul-Wadud (Springfield, MA) was honored Tuesday (Nov. 2) as the Western New England College Male Athlete-of-the-Week. Abdul-Wadud was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Cross-Country Runner-of-the-Year after finishing first among 78 runners at the conference championship last Saturday in Nashua, New Hampshire with a time of 27 minutes, 18 seconds for 8,000 meters. With Abdul-Wadud leading the way, the Golden Bears captured their third consecutive GNAC title. He is an electrical engineering major. Saturday,

Western New England College junior Andrew Lutz (Pittsford, NY) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Cross Country Runner-of-the-Week on Monday (Oct. 4) for the second time this season. He placed first among 52 performers at the WNEC Invitational with a time of 29 minutes, 17 seconds for 8,000 meters. Lutz is a mechanical engineering major. Freshman Asif Abdul-Wadud (Springfield, MA) was selected the GNAC Men's Cross Country Rookie-of-the-Week. He finished second among 95 competitors at the WNEC Invitational after covering the 8,000-meter course in 29 minutes, 29 seconds. Abdul-Wadud is an electrical engineering major. Smith was the Golden Bears' top runner at the Connecticut College Invitational last Saturday covering the 8,000-meter course in 28 minutes, 36 seconds. He is a computer science major at WNEC. Cross Country GOLDEN BEARS' COACHES RUN WELL AT MANCHESTER ROAD RACE SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Western New England College men's and women's cross country coach Brian Walsh and assistant coach Tom Michaud were among the top finishers at the 67th Manchester (Connecticut) Road Race that was held on November 26. Walsh, a native of Southwick, Massachusetts, finished 116th in the field of approximately 10,500 runners covering the 4.75-mile course in 27 minutes, 42 seconds. Lutz placed first among 72 runners at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship in Nashua, New Hampshire to earn Conference MVP recognition. He covered the 8,000-meter course in 27 minutes, 39 seconds. Last year Lutz placed 10th at the conference championship. Nov. 1, 2003 WNEC WINS SECOND GNAC TITLE; ANDREW LUTZ NAMED CONFERENCE MVP NASHUA, N.H. Led by individual champion and Conference MVP Andrew Lutz (Pittsford, NY), Western New England College successfully defended its Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) championship title in convincing fashion. The Golden Bears totaled 39 points followed by Norwich (67), Johnson & Wales (76), Emerson (108), Southern Vermont (133), Emmanuel (142), and Rivier (166). Lutz, a sophomore, toured the 8,000-meter course in 27 minutes, 39 seconds. Last year he placed 10th at the conference championship. Also finishing among the top 10 were sophomore Dave Ross (Palmer, MA) who was eighth (28:54), junior Jason Holmes (South Hadley, MA), ninth (29:00), and junior Adam Orazio (Dalton, MA), 10th (29:04). Sept. 6, 2003 2002 GREAT NORTHEAST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE (GNAC) CHAMPIONS TOM MICHAUD NAMED COCA-COLA MALE ATHLETE-OF-THE-YEAR AT WESTERN NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Men's tennis and cross-country captain/MVP Tom Michaud (Manchester, CT) was honored as the WNEC Coca-Cola Male Athlete-of-the-Year at the school's Spring Sports Banquet on May 4, 2003. Michaud was the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's cross country champion last fall in leading the Golden Bears to their first conference championship. In tennis, he captured the No. 2 singles and was the No. 1 doubles finalist at the GNAC Tournament this spring to help the squad repeat as conference champions. He led the Golden Bears with an overall record of 24-7 (77.4%) and had a 71-35 (67.0%) career-record. GOLDEN BEARS LOOK FOR IMPROVEMENT SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Sept. 7, 2000) Despite losing four of its top seven runners, Western New England College's men's cross country team hopes to improve on last year's third place showing at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. Heading the list returning runners are senior captain Chris McMahon (Stoneham, MA) and sophomore Jon Harris (Monson, MA). "Both these individuals show great leadership and will help the team repeat their performance from last season," said coach Brian Walsh. Among the other top runners are junior Jesse Mushenko (Monson, MA), and sophomores Brian Palmer (Kingston, NY) and Dave Vigliano (Ludlow, MA). Western New England College will compete in eight meets this fall. The GNAC Championship will be held on Saturday, October 28, in manchester, new Hampshire.
