WNEC at NCAA Division III New England Regional Championship (29th/39)

FRESHMAN ASIF ABDUL-WADUD SELECTED THE WNEC MALE ATHLETE-OF-THE-WEEK

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Freshman cross-country runner Asif Abdul-Wadud (Springfield, MA) was honored Tuesday (Nov. 2) as the Western New England College Male Athlete-of-the-Week.

Abdul-Wadud was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Cross-Country Runner-of-the-Year after finishing first among 78 runners at the conference championship last Saturday in Nashua, New Hampshire with a time of 27 minutes, 18 seconds for 8,000 meters.

With Abdul-Wadud leading the way, the Golden Bears captured their third consecutive GNAC title. He is an electrical engineering major.

ANDREW LUTZ AND ASIF ABDUL-WADUD GAIN WEEKLY GNAC HONORS

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Western New England College junior Andrew Lutz (Pittsford, NY) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Cross Country Runner-of-the-Week on Monday (Oct. 4) for the second time this season. He placed first among 52 performers at the WNEC Invitational with a time of 29 minutes, 17 seconds for 8,000 meters. Lutz is a mechanical engineering major.

Freshman Asif Abdul-Wadud (Springfield, MA) was selected the GNAC Men's Cross Country Rookie-of-the-Week. He finished second among 95 competitors at the WNEC Invitational after covering the 8,000-meter course in 29 minutes, 29 seconds. Abdul-Wadud is an electrical engineering major.

Lutz and Abdul-Wadud helped the Golden Bears take top honors in the six-team field.

DAN SMITH EARNS SECOND GNAC RUNNER-OF-THE-WEEK AWARD

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Western New England College senior Dan Smith (Enfield, CT) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Cross Country Runner-of-the-Week on Monday (Sept. 27) for the second time this season.

Smith was the Golden Bears' top finisher at the Gordon College Pop Crowell Invitational finishing 21st among 151 runners in 29 minutes, 32 seconds (5 miles).

With Smith helping to lead the way, Western New England College placed sixth among 17 schools in the team standings. He is a computer science major.

Lutz, a team co-captain, was the Golden Bears' top finisher at the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational covering the 7,980-meter course in 28 minutes, 22 seconds. He is a mechanical engineering major.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Western New England College senior Dan Smith (Enfield, CT) was honored Tuesday (Sept. 14) as the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Cross Country Runner-of-the-Week.

Smith was the Golden Bears' top runner at the Connecticut College Invitational last Saturday covering the 8,000-meter course in 28 minutes, 36 seconds. He is a computer science major at WNEC. The meet was held at Harkness Memorial State Park in Waterford.

GOLDEN BEARS' COACHES RUN WELL AT MANCHESTER ROAD RACE

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Western New England College men's and women's cross country coach Brian Walsh and assistant coach Tom Michaud were among the top finishers at the 67th Manchester (Connecticut) Road Race that was held on November 26.

Walsh, a native of Southwick, Massachusetts, finished 116th in the field of approximately 10,500 runners covering the 4.75-mile course in 27 minutes, 42 seconds.

Michaud, who lives in Manchester, placed 149th with a time of 28:15.

ANDREW LUTZ NAMED THE WNEC MALE ATHLETE-OF-THE-WEEK

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Sophomore Andrew Lutz (Pittsford, NY) was honored Tuesday (Nov. 4) as the Western New England College Male Athlete-of-the-Week.

Lutz placed first among 72 runners at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship in Nashua, New Hampshire to earn Conference MVP recognition. He covered the 8,000-meter course in 27 minutes, 39 seconds. Last year Lutz placed 10th at the conference championship.

With Lutz leading the way, Western New England College captured its second straight GNAC men's cross country title. He is an electrical engineering major.

WNEC WINS SECOND GNAC TITLE; ANDREW LUTZ NAMED CONFERENCE MVP

NASHUA, N.H. — Led by individual champion and Conference MVP Andrew Lutz (Pittsford, NY), Western New England College successfully defended its Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) championship title in convincing fashion.

The Golden Bears totaled 39 points followed by Norwich (67), Johnson & Wales (76), Emerson (108), Southern Vermont (133), Emmanuel (142), and Rivier (166).

Lutz, a sophomore, toured the 8,000-meter course in 27 minutes, 39 seconds. Last year he placed 10th at the conference championship.

Also finishing among the top 10 were sophomore Dave Ross (Palmer, MA) who was eighth (28:54), junior Jason Holmes (South Hadley, MA), ninth (29:00), and junior Adam Orazio (Dalton, MA), 10th (29:04).

Sophomore Dan Smith (Enfield, CT) came in 11th (29:09) while freshman Tim Healey (Milford, CT) was 12th (29:30) in the 72-runner field.

2002 GREAT NORTHEAST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE (GNAC) CHAMPIONS

TOM MICHAUD NAMED COCA-COLA MALE ATHLETE-OF-THE-YEAR AT WESTERN NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Men's tennis and cross-country captain/MVP Tom Michaud (Manchester, CT) was honored as the WNEC Coca-Cola Male Athlete-of-the-Year at the school's Spring Sports Banquet on May 4, 2003.

Michaud was the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's cross country champion last fall in leading the Golden Bears to their first conference championship.

In tennis, he captured the No. 2 singles and was the No. 1 doubles finalist at the GNAC Tournament this spring to help the squad repeat as conference champions. He led the Golden Bears with an overall record of 24-7 (77.4%) and had a 71-35 (67.0%) career-record.

With Michaud leading the way, WNEC compiled a 12-3 record that was a school record for wins and the program's 13th consecutive winning season. Michaud is a economics major.

TOM MICHAUD LEADS WNEC TO FIRST GNAC CHAMPIONSHIP

NASHUA, N.H. (Nov. 2, 2002) — Senior Tom Michaud (Manchester, CT) was the individual winner as Western New England College captured its first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship Saturday. Michaud was selected the championship MVP after covering the 8000-meter course in 26 minutes, 51 seconds.

The Golden Bears had five runners finish in the top 10 with sophomore Dan Smith (Enfield, CT) fifth (27:25), freshman Dave Ross (Palmer, MA) sixth (27:31), sophomore Jason Holmes (South Hadley, MA) ninth (28:24), and freshman Andrew Lutz (Pittsford, NY) tenth (28:31).

Smith, a sophomore, placed third among 52 runners in 17 minutes, 49 seconds for 5,000 meters to help Western New England College finish first among eight schools at the Elms Invitational. He is a computer science major.

WNEC had four runners in the top 10 with sophomore Dan Smith (Enfield, CT) second (17:49), and freshmen Dave Ross (Palmer, MA) fourth (18:27), and Dave Merkt (Enfield, CT) ninth (19;23).

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Sept. 10, 2002) — Men's cross country runner Tom Michaud (Manchester, CT — Manchester High School) was honored Tuesday as the Western New England College Male Athlete-of-the-Week.

Michaud, a senior, made a strong showing in his first varsity race by finishing 50th among 131 runners at the Amherst Invitational. He led the Golden Bears with a time of 29 minutes, 59 seconds over the five-mile course. Michaud also serves as a captain of the WNEC men's tennis team.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Oct. 30, 2001) — Freshman cross country standout Dan Smith (Enfield, CT — Enfield High School) was honored Tuesday (Oct. 30) as the Western New England College Male Athlete-of-the-Week.

Smith finished fourth among 46 runners at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Cross Country Championship on October 27 with a time of 28 minutes, 53 seconds over the five mile course.

His performance helped the Golden Bears to a second place showing among seven schools. A computer science major, Smith has been the Golden Bears' top runner in all six meets this season.

Western New England College will compete in the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championship Saturday (Nov. 10) at Westfield State College.

DAN SMITH NAMED GNAC ROOKIE-OF-THE-WEEK

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Sept. 25, 2001) — Western New England College freshman Dan Smith (Enfield, CT — Enfield High School) was selected the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Cross Country Rookie-of-the-Week on Monday (Sept. 24).

Smith placed 27th among 140 runners at the Gordon College "Pop Crowell" Invitational on September 22 after covering the 5.05-mile course in 30 minutes, 26 seconds.

Smith has been the Golden Bears top runner in all three meets this season.

WNEC will host its own Invitational starting at 11:15 a.m. on Saturday, October 6.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Western New England College's men's cross country team finished 10th among 16 teams at the Gordon "Pop Crowell" Invitational Saturday (Sept. 22) in Wenham, Massachusetts.

Freshman Dan Smith (Enfield, CT) led the Golden Bears by placing 20th among 140 runners with a time of 30 minutes, 26 seconds. Smith has been the team's top runner in all three meets this season.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Oct. 11, 2000) – Western New England College sophomore Brian Palmer (Kingston, NY) was honored Tuesday (Oct. 11) as the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Cross Country Runner-of-the-Week.

Palmer placed fourth among 24 runners at the WNEC Invitational last Saturday (Oct. 7) covering the 8,000-meter course in 30 minutes.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Oct. 7, 2000) – Western New England College placed second at its own invitational with 35 points, only seven points behind winner Springfield College. GOLDEN BEARS LOOK FOR IMPROVEMENT

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Sept. 7, 2000) – Despite losing four of its top seven runners, Western New England College's men's cross country team hopes to improve on last year's third place showing at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference.

Heading the list returning runners are senior captain Chris McMahon (Stoneham, MA) and sophomore Jon Harris (Monson, MA).

"Both these individuals show great leadership and will help the team repeat their performance from last season," said coach Brian Walsh.

Among the other top runners are junior Jesse Mushenko (Monson, MA), and sophomores Brian Palmer (Kingston, NY) and Dave Vigliano (Ludlow, MA).

Western New England College will compete in eight meets this fall. The GNAC Championship will be held on Saturday, October 28, in manchester, new Hampshire.
