New England College Former Springfield College standout Brian Walsh is in his fifth year as the men's cross country coach at Western New England College. In 2002, he led the Golden Bears to their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship and was voted the GNAC Coach-of-the-Year. His squad also took top honors at both the Elms and WNEC Invitationals. Western New England College placed second at the GNAC Championship in 2001 that was held at Suprenant Field for the first time. Walsh led his squad to a fourth place showing at the conference meet in 2000. Walsh is a 1997 graduate of Springfield where he was among the top runners on the Pride's men's cross country and indoor/outdoor track squads. In cross country, Walsh participated in three NCAA Division III Regional Championships and was a two-time district Academic All-America selection. Walsh also ranked among the top middle distance runners in New England. He set a Springfield freshman record in the outdoor 800-meter run (1:53.8) and was the Eastern Championship Rookie-of-the-Year. Walsh also holds the varsity record in the 800 (1:52.8). A native of Southwick, Walsh took first place in the 800 at the ECAC Division III Indoor Championship his freshman year. He also was a four-time national qualifier in the event. Walsh also serves as the women's cross country coach at Western New England College.
